Justin is known for his strange, vintage and to put is bluntly, weird equipment. Justin prefers bigger drums, bigger cymbals and a BIG sound. That is exactly what he gets with his set-up.
1940 Slingerland Radio King Story
If you've seen Justin at a show anytime in recent history you may have noticed his new drum kit that seems to be much older than the man at the throne. The kit is about 70 years old and the drum set has a quite legendary story.
Built downtown Chicago by The Slingerland Drum Company in the early 40's by a select group of craftsman. These craftsman truly cared about their work and the art of making great drums. It still shows today in the look and sound.
The kit was purchased on the south side of Brooklyn, NY. by a man named Nick Knox who joined a punk band from Ohio named The CRAMPS. Nick used this drumset for about five of his fifteen years with the band, including an appearance with the kit in The Rocky Horror Picture Show! The kit then stayed in a garage for several years until it was rescued by The Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Taylor used the Kick drum on several of the Foo Fighters hits you heard off both the One By One & In Your Honor albums.
After Taylor was finished with the kit he sold the kit to Singer/Drummer Dave Ghrol who collected the kit and kept it on display in his office. When the office moved, Dave decided to sell the kit and Justin was the first one to find out about thanks to Shawn Cole, a good friend who knew Justin LOVED to play vintage equipment. Shawn actually bought the kit for Justin knowing he would not want to miss out on the chance to own a piece of Rock & Roll history! And it just so happens that Radio King's were some of the best drums built in history!
Justin uses Remo Vintage A Heads on the top and bottom of every drum and he keeps the bass drum tension quite tight, similar to a big marching bass drum. He keeps the toms very loose.
